Meet Mukudzei
Mukudzei inherited her bright spirit from her mom, Moud, and she also inherited a condition called osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease), which causes her bones to soften and break easily. Mukudzei has been in and out of hospitals since she was born with broken bones in her arms and legs. She developed a limp after a particularly bad fracture in her right femur healed incorrectly. It prevents her from standing upright or walking more than a few feet.
“Since she can’t walk long distances, I carry her on my back to get around. But now she is getting bigger and heavier, I can’t keep carrying her and I don’t want her to live a life of being carried everywhere,” said Moud.
Moud was determined to find a treatment option for Mukudzei’s fractured femur. After visiting several hospitals, she started feeling discouraged by the high treatment costs and demands for equipment to give Mukudzei the surgical treatment she needs. Hope was fading, and Moud feared that Mukudzei would not be able to walk at all.
Thankfully, Moud was referred to CURE Children’s Hospital of Zimbabwe by a local hospital and she gladly accepted the offer for sponsored surgical treatment for Mukudzei. At CURE, Mukudzei will go through several procedures to straighten her femur, and then will receive treatment for any other broken bones that healed incorrectly.
“I want her to be able to stand upright, walk to school, and do anything she wishes in life. I am so happy we found CURE Zimbabwe, it is a miracle, just like Mukudzei is a miracle child,” Moud told us.
Praise God that Mukudzei was up on her feet and walking three months after her first surgery!
